Witty Wednesday # 115

My youngest daughter, Beccy, is responsible for this one!

Better than a Flu Shot!

Miss Beatrice, the church organist, was in her eighties and had never been married.
She was admired for her sweetness and kindness to all.
One afternoon the pastor came to call on her and she showed him into her quaint sitting room.
She invited him to have a seat while she prepared tea.
As he sat facing her old Hammond organ, the young minister noticed a cute glass bowl sitting on top of it.
The bowl was filled with water, and in the water floated, of all things, a condom!
When she returned with tea and scones, they began to chat.
The pastor tried to stifle his curiosity about the bowl of water and its strange floater, but soon it got the better of him and he could no longer resist.
'Miss Beatrice', he said,
'I wonder if you would tell me about this?'
Pointing to the bowl.
'Oh, yes,' she replied, 'Isn't it wonderful?
I was walking through the park a few months ago and I found this little package on the ground.
The directions said to place it on the organ, keep it wet and that it would prevent the spread of disease. Do you know I haven't had the flu All winter.'

Hope you all have a good day, I'm lucky enough to be going out for lunch.

Old Comics Revisted

Embee buys The Guardian Newspaper everyday so he has the crossword to do in his tea break! Recently included with the paper was a re-print of some of the children's comics from the 70's and 80's. I wonder who will remember any of these. I know my daughters will remember Tammy and Bunty, so very different from the comics produced for children these days. Just look at the price of Tammy back in 1971 7d (=3p today) and then it seemed quite pricey.

I remember having comics like Sunny Stories, Girl (first published in 1951), School Friend, and Girls Crystal when I was in my early teens. I couldn't find info about my other comics but I did find this site so you might find your favourite there.

I still have all the annuals (in fact I have all my childhood books) that I used to get for Christmas back in the 50's. All were well loved and re-read many times so they are not all in good condition. I can't bring myself to part with them but I know I'll have to sooner rather than later. I wonder if others have kept childhood books?

Fun Monday # 135

I'm sorry I didn't join in with Fun Monday today, but if you want to see this week participants just visit Ari who wanted to know:
'If you could click your heels three times, and change lives with any character from any film, who would it be and why?'
I think my brain went into melt down and I couldn't think who I'd like to be.

This afternoon I was in my back garden when the Red Arrows zoomed over. I keep trying to get a photo and they keep escaping me. You might just see one of the planes if you enlarge the picture.

Sunday is not a day of rest!

I made sure Embee took a bag with him when he went to get the Sunday papers. The rest of the day he spent laying some more paving slabs to give my blueberry plants more room. There are still six more to go down.

He also put the gogi bush (haha I hear you laughing it looks like a few trailing twigs but I assure you it has grown a lot in a year) onto a stand he knocked up from some spare pieces of wood.

You might be wondering if I helped, I bagged up the old turf and generally did some tidying up. It's also my job to paint/treat the stand to help preserve it! Eventually it will be hidden by the branches ...well that's the plan anyway!

China # 19 Bejing Forbidden City

The Forbidden City has so much interesting history. Built between 1406 and 1420 it was the home of the Emperor and his household for five centuries and since 1987 it has been a world heritage site.

There are large pots all around the buildings...what do you think was their purpose?

There are so many visitors trying to get a view through the door can be quite difficult. To get the picture of the throne I held my phone camera up and hoped for the best, so I'm quite pleased with the result.

Just look at the colour and detail on the building it really is spectacular.

Hope you've enjoyed this little glimpse into the city.

China # 18 Tiananmen Square to the Forbidden City

I don't think anyone will ever forget the awful images of the fateful demonstration that took place in Tiananmen Square back in 1989, when hundreds of protesters lost their lives.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect, and from these pictures it's difficult to capture just how vast an area this square covers.
Below is the first glimpse we got as we walked across from where our coach was parked. This is looking across towards an entrance to the Forbidden City.

It's quite a sombre place even with the sun shining on it.

Below is a Monument to the Peoples Heroes and behind is the Great Hall of People

Walking towards one of the entrance gates of the Forbidden City (will tell you about that in another post).

Just to give you a taster below is one of the Watch Towers that are positioned in each corner of the Forbidden City. There is also a moat with Willow trees growing alongside.

I'm pleased to have seen it but out of all the places we visited, Tiananmen Square, is one place that I would not want to visit again.

Witty Wednesday # 114

I got this from Embee and I hope for his sake he's not thinking about giving me this for Christmas LOL.

LOOK AFTER YOUR WIFE...?

A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting on the patio, drinking beer and watching my wife mow the lawn.?

Cheryl from next door saw us and was so upset that she came over and yelled at me, "You lazy prick! Sitting there drinking beer while your poor wife pushes that ancient lawn mower around! Get up off your fat arse and give her a break!"

I thought 'Shit women!' Took another swig from my stubby, wiped the cold foam from my lips, lifted my sunnies, stared directly at this nosey cow and told her in no uncertain terms to sod off and mind her own business. I told her my wife had green fingers and that she really enjoyed gardening.?

After a few days I felt really bad, so I went out and bought her a ride-on mower to show my senstive side. ?I'm really proud of the deal I got and also very proud that my wife can now sit down while mowing the lawn. Yes guys, we should take good care of our wives... then maybe they'll take good care of us.

I've attached a picture below...hope it comes through OK

Seen on Sunday

When we popped to the Almondsbury Garden Centre on Sunday afternoon we happened to notice these. I think they look rather like octopus (or should I say octopuses!) what do you think? No prizes but who knows what plant they are!

Just a few hundred yards from the entrance to the garden centre I got Embee to stop so that I could take some pictures of the view looking across to the River Severn. It was a particularly clear day and there was a good view of the Severn Bridge.

You might not be able to see the river very easily (a small ribbon of blue towards the left side of the picture just beneath the hills).

I tried to get a closer view but my little point and shoot doesn't do that good a job, and I should have altered the blue in the picture below because it didn't really look that colour.

Fun Monday # 134 If money was no object!

When no one else stepped forward Sayre very graciously volunteered to do the honours again this week. So we must give her a big thank you for that. She wonders....

If you had a WEEK with no obligation and money was no object, what would you do with it?

Now isn't this just a wonderful thought, a week when you could do anything you want, go anywhere buy anything you fancy.
I would buy new houses for my daughters and design one for myself and Embee so that we could cope more easily when we get really old LOL.
I would also make sure I put enough money put aside for my grandchildren's future, well that actually goes for all of us.

I would also want to share my good fortune with some of my favourite charities.

Finally I have always fancied the comfort of flying first class and I would hire a plane to take the whole family on holiday to some where warm like Necker Island owned by Richard Branson.

where we can just chill out and enjoy being cosseted. Heavenly, wish this was for real!

Sorry this was all done in a rush as, unusually I've had a very busy day. I'll come visiting you all over the next couple of days.

Three years ago today....

....I joined the sometimes, weird, but always wonderful world of blogging...

Encouraged by my daughter, Sam and quickly followed by Beccy, I dipped my toes in the water back in 2006.
Little did I realise then that I would meet so many lovely people from around the world and make some good friends. As time has passed I must confess that it's not always easy to find interesting things to write about every day. However as this was intended to be a daily delve into my world, and a means by which I could keep in touch with my family, I really don't think it matters too much.

Just out of interest this will be my 1,052 post and there are 140 on my photo blog, which I started in April 2007.

I love having visitors who comment and over the three years people have dropped in and out. I know how difficult it is to keep up with everyone and I'm guilty of doing a lot more lurking than commenting lately. Maybe that's because I do some plurking and more recently I've become addicted to Farmville on Facebook!

I wonder if I will be blogging in three years time....you'll have to stick around to see!!!

Are we fit for hibernation!!

Yesterday the tortoises were enjoying some September sunshine, as you can see from the photo below. This is a pose you've seen before and one of their favourite spots at this time of the year as they can catch the sun.....

Today they were being examined to make sure they are healthy....

They allowed their mouths to be inspected. All three were said to be in good health...

Then it was time to get them weighed........

Just to make sure they have gained enough to see them through their winter hibernation....

Finally they get measured....

All was well but they do get quite stressed being taken out of their home environment...how do I know...lets just say I had a lot of poopy newspaper to clear up...LOL

Fill in Friday

We have a host for the next Fun Monday. Sayre has very kindly stepped into the breach once again. I must go and see what she has decided for the topic.

Below is a photo of a butterfly I took back in the summer. It had a damaged wing but still seemed to be flying around quite comfortably. I have no idea on the type of butterfly but maybe one of you will know.

Buying for a new baby

I rather think my Witty Wednesday fell flat yesterday as no one managed to see the animated version of the bee peeing (bp petrol/gas) oh well I did try.... do I hear someone (Embee) saying that I'm very trying LOL

So far there doesn't seem to be a volunteer for the next Fun Monday come on folks don't be shy at putting yourself forward.

Yesterday I went out to buy my friend's new grandaughter a little gift. I was going to get something pink but as I'm rather fond of mauve, purple, lavender I decided to get this (the colour is actually much softer than it looks in this picture)...and they can always change it!

Now I'm wondering if I really should have gone for something in baby pink what do you think??

Witty Wednesday # 113

Just one today it arrived from Daffy this morning and just had to share it...
A man was driving down the road and ran out of gas. Just at that moment, a bee flew in his window.

The bee said, 'What seems to be the problem?'

'I'm out of gas,' the man replied.

The bee told the man to wait right there and flew away. Minutes later, the man watched as an entire swarm of bees flew to his car and into his gas tank. After a few minutes, the bees flew out.

'Try it now,' said one bee.

The man turned the ignition key and the car started right up.

'Wow!' the man exclaimed, 'what did you put in my gas tank'?

The bee answered,

Wait for it...

You're just gonna love this..

I see you smiling!!!
