The Viking Splash

Some of you might remember, (from Facebook), that at the end of last month I went over to Dublin for a few days to look after my grand children.  My daughter and son-in-law were going to Belfast with friends and I jumped at the chance to help out.
The weather wasn't particularly good but I did manage to take Mollie and Ben into Dublin for the day, we met up with Dillon for lunch (he's working during the summer holidays) and then we went for a trip on The Viking Splash.
Mollie played her part as a Viking. Ben was very good at roaring like a Viking to frighten passersby!
Ha'penny Bridge (officially The Liffey Bridge)
                                                                  Daniel O'Connell
The river looks quite narrow here.

Just going down the ramp and onto the water!

I did take a very short video while we were on the water can't include that here but I did post it on Facebook (not really worth looking at)!

I had a fun time in Dublin every visit seems to pass so quickly. It was only a few days after I came home that Beccy brought Ben over here for a visit as Mollie had gone to Portugal with friends (wish I had friends with a villa!) and Dillon was continuing to work here.  I'll tell you what we did while they were here in my next post.

Long time no 'see'!!

Thank you to all my blogging friends for all the nice comments and emails to check that all is well with me. After being a dedicated blogger for three years, I suddenly felt that I had very little to say. I found the winter months so depressing and I virtually went into hibernation- a bit like my tortoises!!!
Currently I am staying at Beccy's Killiney (Dublin), where I have been for 10 days. The idea was that I looked after the grandchildren so that Beccy and Joules could pop over to Bristol, for 2 weekends, to help two of Beccy's oldest friends celebrate their big birthdays.
We were all rather worried about about the volcanic ash but the first weekend ran smoothly.

This weekend I think we got a bit complacent, Beccy was actually staying here . Her friend booked the castle for the weekend, complete with swimming pool! All went well until we heard this morning that her flight home this evening was cancelled. She tried to get on an earlier flight but that was full. She has now heard that there is no morning flight tomorrow so they are going to book a car and drive to Hollyhead and catch the ferry across. Well, that's the plan.....
Now I'm due to return home tomorrow evening and I won't know until the morning whether my flight will be operating. If it does then I will have to leave for the airport before Beccy gets home. You see it's beginning to get complicated and the sad thing is it's my grandaughter's birthday tomorrow and quite naturally Beccy is very upset she won't be home when the children get up. Mollie was actually very good about it and thought it was funny her parents were stranded....or maybe she was just being brave!

Ben and I went down to the beach this morning for a walk, it was very pleasant and the sun did shine, although you wouldn't think it by the photo (my bad photography!)
My eldest grandson, who turned 17 in March, had his first driving lesson this afternoon. I was amazed when the instructor told me he would get Dillon doing 'hill starts, reversing, and turns' I certainly don't remember doing that in lesson one! Anyway he came back after a 2 hr lesson, having thoroughly enjoyed it. The instructor thinks he will need about 3 weeks of lessons before he can practice with his parents, so I'm looking forward to the time when he can drive his poor old grandmother about...that won't do his street cred any good whatsoever!!!
I couldn't resist taking a picture of Dillon sitting the car (sadly not too clear) and that's the instructor standing by the door.

I'm not allowed to put it on Facebook but I thought I would risk it on my blog as he doesn't read it!

Well that all my most recent news, time will tell whether I manage to get home tomorrow. I know my mother will not be too happy as she has a hair appointment on Tuesday, but hopefully Embee will be able to take her! Are you reading this Embee???

No Frills Flights

Something Willowtree said recently on Plurk (don't ask me what it was because I've now forgotten) made me think about how flying to Dublin has changed since I took my first ever flight back around 1995. Yes that's right I was in my 50's before I stepped aboard a plane. I bet to many of you that will seem really odd.

Growing up after the war ordinary folks like us were fairly poor and as my mother ran a shop we didn't even have a holiday until I was 16. That year I was lucky enough to be allowed on a school trip to Switzerland (ferry and train). I remember it so well being *abroad*! That was the same year my parents sold our shop and we also had our first family holiday in Devon. I digress and that's a whole story in itself, which I think I may have touched on before.

As you will know Beccy moved to live in Dublin in 1994 and so began my regular flying back and forth. In those days it was only Aer Lingus who flew from Bristol Airport and flights cost over a £100. It didn't occur to me to be nervous about the actual flight but I was very nervous about the nuts and bolts, such as getting on the right plane! Of course it was easy once you you had done it. It is a very short flight but you got breakfast back then -well coffee and a muffin. If you travelled with children you got a goody bag to keep them occupied and I recall they even allowed children to peep into the cockpit- can you imagine that happening these days.

Then along came Ryanair, a budget airline, based in Dublin, who slashed the cost of fares. It was wonderful, I can remember a return flight for as low as £10 and I think I once only paid £5. For many years I regularly flew to Dublin for under £20. This meant I was able to visit Beccy several times a year; the other good thing back then was there were no restrictions on luggage. You would be amazed at the things that have been taken over to Beccy, such as pushchair, bikes, step ladder, three large kitchen stools.

I don't exactly recall when Mike O'Leary (Ryanair Chief executive) decided to tighten things up. One of the first things I recall is he started charging for wheelchair use, however, I believe this was challenged, but I understand everyone now pays a wheelchair levy! He reduced the luggage allowance, then he charged for checking in a bag, as he only wanted people to travel with hand luggage.

As the Ryanair prices increased I realised that Aer Lingus flights had become more competitive and there was only a pound or so difference. The advantage was a more generous luggage allowance, a more comfortable flight and better scheduling, so I went back to using Aer Lingus. Then a couple of years ago Aer Lingus stopped flying from Bristol and I had to again return to using Ryanair. You will often see they advertise very low cost or even free flights! Don't be fooled because this is misleading- once all the extras are added on the price of the flight creeps up.

You have to pay various airport taxes and an insurance levy since 9/11; plus you get charged for using a debit or credit card and even though it is one transaction I believe you get charged double for a return flight (unless you use their credit card). There is no choice you have to use a card to book, be it on line or over the phone actually it costs more over the phone as they only want people to book online-very clever.
On top of this you can pay for priority boarding but why you would want to I really don't know. The free drink and snack has long gone and I'm not sure what they charge for a coffee because I never buy one.

I think you are getting the picture no frills flights are becoming much more expensive for less of everything -less luggage, less service. Ryanair actually plan to dispense with the check in desk altogether over the next year or so-they assume everyone had internet access to check in online and the facility to print a boarding pass!

Now I started writing this post a few days ago but didn't get it posted so there is a...

Postscript.
Just heard on the news Ryanair are even thinking of putting a coin slot on the doors of their plane toilets. In the future it might cost £1 to spend a penny-what ever money making scheme will they come up with next!

Ben's Tune

One of the first things Ben wanted to do when he came home from school on my first day in Ireland was to play me a little tune he had composed himself. He calls it Ben's amazing super song! Of course he was so keen that he managed to hit a few wrong notes but I took a little video of it and thought I would share it.

He has entered all his notes into a little book.

Postcard from Dublin #3 Orphans

Sadly Beccy's neighbour died very suddenly a couple of weeks ago and she had two cats that Beccy is currently feeding twice a day. They have been used to sleeping in the garden shed but they are beginning to get used to Beccy and come running when she takes out the food. It was quite amusing the other morning when the clocks altered because they were prowling on the wall in Beccy's garden looking for her and meowing loudly. Both cats come from the same litter but I can't remember if they are both male nor can I remember their names and Beccy is out playing tennis so I can't ask her!
It would be lovely if they were not so timid because they are really rather nice looking cats.

Postcard from Dublin #2

This afternoon we braved the cold wind to take a walk at Carrickgollogan. We had spectacular views from one of the hilltops and I will share some of these with you when I get home. Meanwhile this is a view of the Sugarloaf mountain, taken from where we parked the car. Below is a picture of Beccy, Dillon and Mollie all wrapped up against the cold.

Post card from Dublin

Just thought I would share a picture of my youngest grandson Ben hulling strawberries and doing his bit for the environment by using the compost bin. Beccy has him well trained!

The weather seems to have changed for the worst since I arrived here, it's much colder and has been raining quite a lot.

Yesterday we went to buy Mollie some school shoes. Well to be exact she wanted to exchange the ones her mother bought a couple of months back as she felt they were uncomfortable. Luckily she mentioned it before she wore them outside. The problem we had was that every pair of shoes she tried on didn't fit properly or they they didn't have them in her size. After much searching we did finally find a pair she liked that fitted her. You can imagine the relief!

While all this was going on Ben was more than a little bit bored so he chose McDonalds for lunch after which we took him to look at the new Hamley's Toy Shop that had just opened in Dundrum Shopping Centre. It would have been easy to spend a fortune and from the number of people shopping it certainly didn't look as though there was any evidence of a recession! Or maybe everyone was just looking like us!

Beccy lives close to this beach so I might get a nice bracing walk!

Ringside Seat

While I was visiting Beccy and the family last month I managed to get a little video of Mollie knocking a few tennis balls to her mum, and Ben starting a tennis lesson.
This was the first time Mollie had picked up a racquet for a few weeks because of the problems with her feet. I think she was more interested in looking at me than keeping her eye on the ball!
Ben clearly wanted to aim his ball at me, you might hear Rob (the coach) ask him if he's trying to hit the camera and he replied.....see if you can hear! It's a pity about the background noise but on a nice day the lawns have to be cut!

Mount Usher Gardens cont.......

You may remember seeing a couple of the photos I took when I visited Mount Usher Gardens. It was such a beautiful place, that I couldn't resist showing a few lot more of the, many, photos I took during that visit:
I really love this view and I was very pleased with the shot. I have played around with the lighting on all of these just to get some practise.
There are lots of little bridges over the river.........
and many different trees to admire!
Now, look at this little chap who was helping the gardeners. When we first arrived he was very intent on his task . Anyone like to hazard a guess as to what was keeping him so occupied!
Eventually he did come over and make friends and I expect by now you will have gathered I do love dogs.He was so sweet and he reminded me of my dog 'Titch' that I had when I was about 5 years old!
Beccy and Dillon underneath the arch!
Beccy with her mother-in-law.
Dillon is taking his own artistic photos of the pet cemetery. This is such a lovely little area and clearly from the dates on the stones it is still very much in use.
All the paths wind in and out. There were lots of crocus and daffodils (I'll be posting some more photos of those later in the week~ probably on my other blog).
A couple of other views of the river.
I hope you enjoyed seeing these and if you are ever in that neck of the woods it's worth a visit!!

P.S. Later this morning my mother has to go back to the hospital for the first check up. She is just beginning to move around more freely and her leg is less painful, so hopefully all will be well when they remove the dressing.

When Beccy and I went shopping to Dunnes Stores we saw this bed and decided that it would be a fun place to relax in the sun. However, we were not quite so sure about the name~ hope it doesn't put buyers off!!!

2nd Postcard from Dublin

Now here is a little poser for you!
As Beccy drove me through a quiet little road near her home I got this view of the sea through these gates that just happened to be open.

Now do you remember the TV programme Through the Keyhole hosted by Loyd Grossman (in my opinion he has the most irritating voice, but we won't get into that debate!) So this is a variation without being able to ask me any questions... how about deciding who actually lives behind these gates!!!

The wanderer returns home

I got home at about 16:00 and as my hubby is out for the evening I decided to catch up and read my 143 emails and write this very short post. The flight home was uneventful and as it was a lovely sunny afternoon as we flew over Bristol there were some spectacular views. As the plane descended I had my camera poised all ready for some (good-well maybe) photos and the stewardess came and said no photos to be taken during landing. I was quite annoyed as we were several minutes away from landing and I don't think I was aware of this 'rule'. I don't recall cameras being mentioned along with mobile phones and laptops in all the spiel they give you. Clearly no one noticed me taking a photo as we left Dublin so that's all I have offer.

Anyone who read this post will know that I mislaid my passport just before this trip and what was the first thing I found on my return home, you've guessed it.

Said passport was in the handbag I originally intended to take with me to Dublin but decided against at the last minute. I'm relieved as it would have meant a long drive to Newport in Wales to get a replacement as I need it in a couple of weeks time.
