Fun Monday # 101 Bookworms

Today Angela is very kindly hosting Fun Monday and this is the task she has set us.

OK, I know that pretty much all of you out there are bookworms.

So for Fun Monday on 2nd February, firstly tell me what book you are reading now. What's it about? Are you enjoying it and why? If not, why not?

Worms who mentioned worms because this is the book that I have been reading for the last couple of weeks!

Now as to the real assignment......I have to confess to having an ever increasing mountain of books that I'm still trying to find time to read. I haven't read a novel since before Christmas so I'm going to bend the rules and mention one I have only just started reading.
I've never heard of the author and I think it is going to be a light weight Regency romance. In my 20's I was an avid reader of Georgette Heyer novels and my guess is this book will be something similar.

I also want to mention the two little booklets that we had free with The Telegraph, newspaper over the weekend. The booklets are full of handy hints to save money and time and EmBee and I have enjoyed perusing them. I might even share some of the hints in future posts.

And secondly, Angela wants to know if we were to be stranded on a desert island, what one book would we take with us.

I didn't have to think for very long to realise it would have to be one of these books.

I can see you scratching your heads and wondering what sort of a collection. It's my photo albums long before everything became digitalised. So I think I would want to have a book of family photos with me should I be unlucky enough to be stranded alone on a desert island.

Sorry there is nothing here to inspire your future reading- Oh, I did buy Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates at the weekend (half price so got tempted) so I'm wondering if it will be on anyone's recent read today!

Enjoy your week; I will be visiting everyone over the next couple of days and you will find the other bookworms at Angela's place.

Hunt the Book

Many of you will know that, my eldest daughter, Sam has been in San Francisco for the past seven years. I think it is safe to say that she is very happy living there and hopes to remain there permanently. I've shipped a lot of her belongings over and some things have gone over in a suitcases as we have travelled to and fro. Despite this there are still a lot of things that has been left in storage with me. I have got one small room that is stacked practically from floor to ceiling. A few boxes of teapots belong to Beccy but the vast majority belong to Sam. Now she is very keen to have one particular cookery book that is in one of the many boxes. In hindsight I don't know why I didn't take it to Portugal when we met up there back in June!
Anyway yesterday I decided to go and look through the boxes and try to find the book. At the time I also thought I would record the search. I think this was a mistake, because it's turned out to be a fairly boring video so I'm not really expecting you to watch it.
So if you didn't watch the video~this is a photo of the storage room and the book I found
Now do you think the reason she treasures this book is because of the rather sweet inscription, written in her own fair hand!

I have an earlier version of this same cookery book that is so old and battered because it has been so well used over the years. It has been stuck with cellotape and is covered with food marks but I wouldn't ever part with it and I still use it more than all my other cookery books. I wonder if you have a favourite cook book!

Book Swap

Emma very kindly hosted a book swap a few weeks ago and today I was delighted when a parcel arrived with not one but three books. How lucky is that, one of the books is actually for my daughter Sam who lives in San Francisco. The books came all the way from, Natalie, in Florida and you can find her over at BarknKnit. I find Natalie also writes at The world according to Gnat so she is one busy lady as far as blogging is concerned, and she knits and quilts, oh and I do believe she might like dogs!
Natalie says she lived in SF for 4 and a half years and found 'The Golden gate Trailblazer' a useful book and it's full of ideas for walks, bikes etc in SF and Marin. I have not read the two novels 'The Secret Life of Bees' by Sue Monk Kidd and 'Flowers for Algernon' by Daniel Keys so I'm really looking forward to some great reading now the evenings are drawing in. You will see in the photo Natalie also sent me one of her knitted bookmarks- so a BIG THANK YOU Natalie I consider myself to be very fortunate. Sam is also delighted you thought of her-however, I'm not so sure I can say the same of, Fred, (Sam's partner) that might be just a little too much excercise!!

Also a big thank you to Emma for organising this book swap I'm sure everyone will agree it's been great fun and lovely to be introduced to new authors.

Fun Monday# 22

We have a little Swampwitch hosting Fun Monday this week and this is the task she set us:

"So, Fun Monday's challenge for today June 25 is to post pictures of your bookshelves or stacks of books. Hopefully, we will be able to read some of the titles. If you want, while you're at it, post pictures of ANY shelves...shelves with toys, dishes, collections, Aunt Gertrude's ashes in an urn, etc. Also, post pictures of your garage, carport, or places where you store 'stuff.' (No cleaning first, but if you must, maybe this will be the motivation to do so.)"

I've cheated for half of this because I posted pictures of my clutter sometime back so although we have tidied up a lot little since then I'll just link to that post so that you can feel very smug because no one will have as much junk and muddle as we do and you may even choose NOT look at the link!!! here

As my little slide show proved popular last week I decided to do the same again. I have not tidied the shelves so you are getting as it was yesterday when I took the photos.

Dining room: The first bookcase mostly contains nursing, social work, health, books. The other unit has a set of encyclopedia , Kipling, travel, books on Bristol, also shelves of nicknacks and pictures. The other small bookcase is full of EmBee's books (and stuff). The recipe shelves have been in a previous Fun Monday post so won't dwell on those. Bookshelves in top bedroom include books not yet read. I have just given you a glimpse into Embee's study (far too full to use) shelves all around. You will see a bookcase of children's books some from when the girls were young plus others I have got for my grandchildren. I have one cupboard full of toys for them and although they have really grown too old for these, they still enjoy creating with stickle bricks and lego. In my sitting room I have an untidy cupboard of games, video and DVD's. Also in that room you will see figurines and paintings done by my grand children, on shelf units either side of the fire.
I'm tempted to watch a little Wimbledon but I think I'll go visiting your shelves instead see you soon!!

PS Now I have posted and viewed the slide show I did it smaller (it looked fine on my screen) but published it is not as clear as I would have liked- no time to change it!!

Super Natural Cooking

I was very excited when a parcel arrived in the post from Amazon. I guessed it was a present from Sam (Mothering Sunday) and she'd hinted that it was something not yet available in England. I was actually chatting, on the phone, to Beccy at the time the postie rang the bell. This was good because if I'd been out and missed the delivery I would have had to collect it next week. You can imagine my delight when I opened the package to see I have this super cookbook that Sam was so excited about when she was given a copy by the author. I couldn't find the the post in her archives to give the link but I did find this reference on her fun Monday post when Beccy hosted.

When I did the meme earlier I think I said I had 81+ cookery books that should now read 82+. There is such a lot of helpful information in this book and I have seen several recipes I am really keen to try as soon as possible.

Big thank you Sam :) xxx
