A tutorial in editing photos!!! PLT #4

I've just come back from my hairdresser and had a very interesting visit. Sarah's husband is a professional photographer and I was asking him a few questions about photoshop elements, photography and editing in general and he was so helpful. He gave me a personal tutorial and I have actually learned quite a lot but don't expect me to magically improve. I now understand why I will never be able to produce really good photographs with my little digital, good as it is for it's type! Steve is considering doing a workshop for those who want to learn more and if it gets off the ground I will certainly be attending. He is also going to recommend an idiots guide book which is something I have been wanting for ages. I know I have not had this camera very long but it looks like I need an even better one that will download raw photos if I'm to achieve the editing that I aspire towards. Having spoken about photos I think I'd better include a PLT shot. This is a view of a local golf course that my mother enjoys from her bedroom window.

Glamorous Great-Gran

You might recall that my mother is no longer able to venture very far and for the last few months I have been cutting her hair. Although this has been fairly successful, my mother still misses going to have her hair professionally styled. I was wondering what to give her as a treat for Mothering Sunday (don't worry, you haven't forgotten I know it's a week away) and in a flash I knew if I could get her an appointment with my hairdresser she would be delighted. Sarah was so helpful and although she is always busy she managed to fit in an appointment yesterday afternoon. My mother had a relaxing head massage, she got her hair properly styled and she had tea and biscuits. What more could she want......as we drove home she said....."perhaps I could come every time you go"!!!!!!......

Where have I been today

Now I pose the question what do you think is behind this door. I hear you say is she off her rocker it's a garage door so there must be a car in there or its full of tools and junk. Wrong (scroll down slowly).

Walk around the side and you see the real entrance. No clues here.

Is this a give away? Someone very busy sweeping the floor. If you look you will see tools of the trade. I think the mirrors are a big clue.

I think if you haven't guessed yet the two basins are the final giveaway.

So today saw me taking my regual six weekly trip to the hairdresser. Sarah who owns the salon is the blonde and Rosanna is her assistant. I believe I have mentioned before that I have been one of Sarah's clients for over 10 years and she moved from rented premises to her converted garage several years ago. It was part of her planning consent that the garage facade remained, so from the road it looks like all the other houses. The actual salon is quite large, with a small kitchen and a cloakroom. It's more like visiting a friend and you get to know lots of the other clients and share sorrows and joys.

Today Sarah shared some good news she is getting married in September and she is planning for the ceremony to take place in Cyprus. So I shall enjoy getting regular updates between now and then. I wish Sarah and her partner, Steve, a long and happy life together.

Relax and Enjoy

After a wonderful warm sunny day yesterday with temperatures in the mid 20's it suddenly started raining very heavily this morning. I should have heeded the weather forcast and then my washing would not be languishing on the line and far wetter than when I put it out. I have just got back from my hairdresser's' stupidly leaving my umbrella in the car; however Sarah provided me with a plastic bag made into a little hat which saved the day (and hair) and I reached the car, which luckily was parked nearby, in a reasonably dry state. A visit to 'Further Ahead' is a lovely social ocassion, which I can really enjoy now I am no longer trying to fit in visits in a late lunch hour or at the end of a tiring working day. Sarah has built her salon in the garden of her home, and her loyal clientele are very friendly and get to know each other really well. I was first recommended to Sarah by a friend at my tennis club, which must be about twelve years ago. It's surprising how you can meet people at the hairdressers, Sarah actually introduced me to a neighbour of mine. It turned out we had lived five houses away from each other for many years but had never met each other. Another coincidence is that I also know a relative of this neighbour through my work and my neighbour runs a pre-school and what was my job before I retired, a childcare inspector, (I would hasten to add not in the area where my neighbour works). Today, I also came away with several recipes from a magazine that Sarah popped across to her home and copied for me. (Sam, I may end up doing some food reviews you never know!!). I should also mention Rosanna, who helps Sarah, she gave me a wonderfully relaxing head massage. So anyone looking for a good hairdresser look no further.
I may have to call upon some of my nursing skills soon, our immediate neighbour and friend of 20 years was discharged from hospital on Weds after surgery which resulted in him needing to use crutches for a while. Mike popped in to see him early evening yesterday and found him enjoying the sun in the garden; however a couple of hours later there was no sign of him but a pool of blood in the garden as you can imagine we were really worried. To cut a long story short, the outcome, following police investigation (and I have to say they were very good returning to let us know) was that he had fallen and had broken his nose (hence all the blood); he had called to us but we were in the house at that time and had not heard him. His daughter had arrived and taken him to hospital and she later called to let us know that he was being kept in hospital overnight. So I am waiting for an update later today. As I was writing this our neighbour's daughter called to say she had just settled him back at home and he is in considerable discomfort with a very swollen face. So I will be helping to keep an eye on him for the next few days- I must polish up on the old bedside manner and powers of persuasion as he is very independent; but what he may not realise is that I will actually enjoy helping out. Could this be back to my original career?
