Happiness is....

having a new handbag (purse). My mother has been pestering lamenting
for several weeks that she needs a new handbag. She managed to get the lining caught in the zip of her winter bag and she cut it open (I didn't know anything about it until the deed was done as I might have been able to fix it). Naturally it was damaged goods and so it had to be thrown away. Originally the bag came from a charity shop so it didn't cost a lot and my mother was convinced that she would get another in the same way, but having scoured all the local charity shops we had no luck.
So today I had to go and sort out some carpeting at our local Mall and decided I would take a look at some of the stores to see if I could find a suitable bag. Eventually I came up with this one, which meets all her criteria...easy zip, not many compartments so easy to find things, big enough to carry a snack (she often likes to take a biscuit or dried fruit out with her, it saves buying a pudding when she has her lunch out on a Wednesday!). (The colours are not really showing that well, it's basically brown with some bronze)
When I got it home I could see by her initial reaction that she wasn't sure, but within half an hour, with a little subtle persuasion (I told her I would like it for me, and I shortened the handle by one notch) she now thinks it is just right, and that I know exactly what she likes! Phew thank goodness for that.... I even told her she could have it for an early birthday present but she had to realize she wouldn't be getting anything else come the day (her birthday isn't until December), her response was "that's a pity". In the past she has often wanted early presents and then I managed to find something else on the day. However I'm retired now so I have to budget a lot more carefully but you never know I might just find a little surprise as I expect she will have forgotten the bag was her present by then!!
