Fun Monday # 51 My bedside drawers!
Angela over at The Lurchers may only have joined in during the past few Mondays, but she has come up with a really good assignment this week she says......
So continuing in the spirit of "being interested in people", I would like to know, or see, what's on, in or under your bedside table! So open those draws and bare your soul to us! Is there anything special there that has a story or a memory that you can tell us about? Books that you keep there to delve into from time to time? Trinkets that you don't know where else to put? Let's see!
This sets the scene... my bedside shelves and two drawers...with a peep inside! Oh and just to show I didn't tidy up completely that necklace hangs on the wardrobe knob to stop it getting tangled I need to do what Robin suggests!
From inside the drawers I've picked out a few things, there is my old Christmas stocking that Sam made when the girls used fill stockings for me and embee which was rather sweet, lots of the little things you see are those presents. My old leather photo frame has early pictures of me and my parents, it's falling apart which is why I keep it in the drawer. The paper cutting is a picture of Beccy's classmates when she was in infant school, I don't remember the project they had done or why it was in the local paper~maybe you can tell us Beccy!. The stamp album is a relic from my childhood, when back in the mid 1950's I enjoyed this hobby.
I'd forgotten which books I had languishing in the bottom drawer, shows how often I open it! There are a couple I haven't read yet, however, the 'Empty Nest' is a very good read, particularly if like me, you hate the thought of your children leaving home. Don't get me wrong I always encouraged my children to be independent, but I was not prepared for how it would actually affect me. Looking back I was probably quite depressed without ever realising it, the experience is very akin to going through the bereavement process.
'You can heal your life' is a book I still dip in and out of sometimes. Blogging has seriously interfered with my reading and I now have a huge pile of books (not shown here) that need my attention!
Sam was in a Hugo Boss promotion for their perfume 'Women". For a short time she edited a competition magazine, she wrote on competitions for the Daily Mail, oh and for a while she had a 5 minute slot on a TV programme called 'The Big Breakfast way back in 1992~in the days of Chris Evans and Paula Yates!
Although I don't drink tea myself I always have tea in the house. In 1970 there was a celebration of 100 Years of British Achievement. You could collect cards on the Typhoo tea packets and in the interest of educating my children I used to save them, but alas there is one of the 24 that I could never find! I'm not really sure why I keep them!
One year Embee gave me this set of tennis cards. I think the intention was that I would frame them but I never got around to that!
This scrappy piece of paper is something my mother wrote out and gave me so I keep it~ she calls it the gifts of Spirit.
I show you this because it made me laugh when I found it in the drawer~ when my grandchildren were small they used to jump into bed with me and to keep them occupied I used to think up little games and one day (way before Mollie could read) I made up a quick crossword for her and I seem to remember she was quite good. I think it's as well she couldn't read looking at some of my spelling~ since when is this the way to spell 'handd'!!
I think it's time I was off to see what's lurking in your drawer!!

Happy Fun Monday. I hope you can find time to drop by for a visit today.
I love the 'the gifts of Spirit' list.
I bet you could use it for a Meme or Fun Monday!
That newspaper cutting was taken after we had the school holiday to Cornwall when I was ten. We bought all those bown pottery mugs and bowls and that's what we are holding in the picture.
wow, i see what you mean--neat on the outside only.
i love it. i love that you save such sentimental and meaningful mementos.
It's so lovely to see family momentos...I figured if anyone would have lots, you would!
I love your mother's list. I had to enlarge the photo to figure out what's hanging from the knob (your necklace but it looked like it could be something else). I think you have the most interesting drawers.
I love the shelves/nightstand combo - terrific idea!
Your drawers look like they hold your memories. Nice to have them handy like that.
Great post! I LOVED those old B&W photos of your's, so beautiful!:))
The corner shelf is beautiful. So are your pictures.
Your drawers remind me of the drawers in the desk in my parents' room.
My kids would be disappointed with mine! I should get this fixed immediately.
Thanks for the peek. Great mementos and memories. I love the list your mom wrote out for you.
Wow, you have some wonderful keepsakes in your drawers! I enjoyed my visit here...

You are too clever for your own good.
Hand over the tennis cards and no one gets hurt.
ChrisB--how fortunate that you have your mother's "gifts of the spirit". She didn't leave much out did she? And the homemade crossword puzzle--don't you just love finding these things when you don't expect to see them?

What a fantastic job on this post! You have really outdone yourself on this Fun Monday - I loved all your stuff. Makes we want to know what is in all the nooks and crannies at your house.
You should make a scrapbook and call it "My Bedside Treasures". You have so many wonderful pieces and they each seem to have a story and hold a place in your heart.
That's not a nightstand...it's a treasure chest! I love it!
You had a great Fun Monday post! Such detail! Love the old pictures and things the kids wrote. Priceless.
You had a lot more things there than I would have imagined! I love your bedside table. :) And you can still frame those cards. :)

Your nightstand post is so complete. I like your treasures, the tennis cards, your handwrittrn gifts of the Spirit, the crossword created for little Mollie as well as your books. Your have displayed these items quite nicely.
I remember becoming an empty nest parent. Luckily, I began teaching school myself the next week so I had little time to fret.
MUM! i am not sure about competitor's journal being on the interweb.
You have a lot of treasures there, but it was the tennis cards that really caught my attention.
Those are very cool.
Hi Chris, just love that beautiful old house of yours and all your treasures were interesting.
BTW the photo on my shelf is one I took of my ex wife, its there because I love both the photo and the lady.

Wow, almost like a travelog through your life - and all that is in your bedside table? Whatever do you put out everywhere else? Great post, great pictures!
Such a fun post Chris! I guess I should have dived in and looked through my night stand drawers. I'm a little under the weather - so I decided to rest, instead.
I think yours was perhaps the true "spirit" for what the Fun Monday topic called.

What awesome treasures you keep! Thanks for sharing them with us. I particularly liked the gifts of the spirit list. I'd keep that forever if someone gave it to me.
Great post for Fun Monday :) And thanks for your comments on mine. I hope that I keep hoarding random things. I think I might start scrapbooking to keep random things, but somehow that seems rather too organised - it's great to find things like that crossword and how the memories make you smile. And now they make your blog readers smile!
Great images - I'm impressed with your technical skills.
Gifts of Spirit?? Wow, I expect you will treasure that always...
Love all the memento's. Perfect place for them I'd say!
