Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Day

Firstly an observation:
Yesterday we had a record number of participants for Fun Monday I think it was about 78. One thing puzzles me...I revisited several of these posts and on some where I know I left a comment those comments are not showing up. I realise that some might be waiting for approval before being posted, but what about the others. I do believe this happened when I commented via bloglines does this make a difference...anyone know? I would hate you to think I have not been visiting and leaving a comment!
*************************************************************************************

I expect everyone is busy making batter for pancakes.....because today is Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, which is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.

Lent is the 40 day period leading up to Easter and was traditionally a time of fasting. On Shrove Tuesday Christians went to confession and were "shriven" (absolved from their sins). It was the last opportunity to use eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients.

I have not made pancakes for many years mainly as it is something Embee and I should not really eat but this year I'm wavering.. I'll see what he thinks when he gets home later!!
In case anyone is interested this is what Sam wrote about Pancake day back in 2005. You will see what she thought about my cooking when she was a child~ good job I can laugh or I might cry!! However she did have a good word to say about my pancake making!!
Pancake races are a tradition in some parts of the country as you can see from this old image I found. I bet my grandchildren are looking forward to a huge plate of these for their tea!

I forgot that Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is also Shrove Tuesday.

Thanks for the brain nudge - pancakes it is, tonight.

I noticed signs for pancakes on churches whilst driving around the other day, so was reminded that tonight's the night. While we don't do Lent, we like to do the pancakes. :)

We call it Fat Tuesday so we can shove our face full of custard filled donut type things.

I remember when you posted last year - because I had NEVER heard of it before. (Well, Fat Tuesday here - but not Pancake Day) Well, I'm going to catch in on it this year!

Wait...you can comment directly from bloglines? Wihout actually going to the website? How do you do that? I don't see that option anywhere and would so totally love to have it.

Shriven - I've never heard of that word. I love how it sounds. I went out to a charity event to have pancakes. A nice break from unpacking.

Chris, you can't comment from Bloglines, bloglines simply displays the xml feed. In order to comment you have to click on the post, which takes you to the post itself, so Bloglines can't be the problem.

The problem lies with Blogger, I've spoken about this before. when there are a lot of comment son a post, you you cant' see yours unless you scroll down. Sometimes blogger rejects a comment for WV or html errors, but you don't know becasue you have been notified.

i'd much rather pancake day than mardi gras!! i need to start this tradition in our house, tho i think it will be the fat puffy pancakes and not the ones that are so much nicer with the sweets inside :-)

Pancake day sounds yummy! I wish I had known earlier, guess I'll have to have pancakes tomorrow. :)

I didn't know any of this. And I grew up surrounded by Catholics. My brothers and their wives included. How did I miss an excuse for yummy food?

We have made batter to eat waffles in the morning. Of course it will be Wednesday.

Maybe I can make a new tradition for our church. Waffle Wednesday!

I knew that today was Shrove Tuesday but didn't know what it meant (nor about the pancakes). Thanks for the education. Mardi Gras was more prevalent where I live, so I had jambalaya, red beans and rice, Cajun chicken and a piece of Kings Cake (just like in New Orleans). I even wore a handful of beads to work today because I knew I wouldn't be partying (I'm too old for that anymore!).

I see someone beat me to a FAT TUESDAY comment. Heck, it's Fat Wednesday, Thursday & Friday here too. HA HA.

I visited so many Fun Mons' yesterday that I got to the point I was sure I'd commented twice on some. It was REALLY BIG

The boys in our household pigged out on pancakes. Mollie doesn't like them and I was too stuffed from my lunch out!

So did you have them or didn't you? Pancakes are quite low fat really. It's just the sugar that makes them bad for you!!!!

I love pancakes!

I live near Olney where the original Pancake Race is held and I've yet to make the effort to go see it...

Only two pancakes for me, lemon and maple syrup - yumm!

I've kind of given up on making it around to all of the Fun Monday participants. I have to get at least a little bit of work done on Mondays after all!

I just made pancakes this past Sunday morning for the first time in a very long time. Organic blueberry pancakes with organic blueberry syrup. Yum.

I'm not sure if I've ever even heard of pancake day or I guess realized that was what it was for anyway. I love pancakes but we don't have them very often.

alix not sure about the advert!

bs your mardi gras food sounds good as well! too old to party ~ I don't believe it!

cynthia I will be playing!

sally in the end embee didn't seem too bothered so I decided not to now I have a net of lemons to use!

toffeeapple I can't believe you have never been to see the race~ you must go just once! I can pass on the maple syrup but I love lemon.

sauntering soul now ~I know I would love those pancakes anything blueberry and organic is good as far as I'm concerned. I have blueberries most days if not fresh then dried! costs me a fortune.
